Putting Your Knee Brace On
- Sit on a stable chair with your knee slightly bent
- Unfasten each of the Velcro straps on the back of the brace and reattach them back onto themselves to prevent tangling
- Place the brace on your leg so that the centre of the hinges lines up at the top of the kneecap
- Ensure the sides of the frame sit medially and mid-laterally on the leg
- Fasten the upper calf strap, then the lower calf strap. The lower calf strap should sit on the crest of the shin bone.
- Fasten the lower thigh strap then the upper thigh strap securely but not too tightly - overtightening may restrict circulation or result in downward migration of the brace
- To check the fit, walk around to make sure the brace feels comfortable and that there are no gaps or pressure points
- If necessary, readjust the straps to tighten or loosen the brace
Setting the Flexion and Extension Stops
Pull the pins out and push them back in at the desired degree to limit flexion or extension as necessary throughout your recovery.
Taking Your Knee Brace Off
- Sit on a stable chair with your knee slightly bent.
- Unfasten each of the Velcro straps on the back of the brace and reattach them back onto themselves to prevent tangling.
- Pull the brace off your leg and store while not in use.
Getting Used to the Brace
- Start by wearing the brace 30 minutes a day for the first few days, gradually increasing the length of time
- It's important to routinely wear the brace during weight-bearing activities (when you're on your feet). This will reduce joint loading and you'll begin to feel relief. However, it may take a number of weeks for relief to become significant.
Washing Your Brace
- If your brace gets dirty, remove the liner and wash by hand with mild soap and cool water. Rinse thoroughly and air dry.
- Wipe down the rigid part of the brace with a damp cloth.
